Rainbow Trout fishing on the Kenai River in June

June 11th marks the beginning of the primary trout season on the Kenai River. This date marks the regular season opener to a large chunk of the Kenai river for Rainbow Trout fishing. Early on, fishermen must use their best judgement to make sure they are not targeting spawning fish as the newly opened river section holds a large amount of spawning habitat.

Often, we find ourselves targeting the dime bright 20-24 inch trout that are busy intercepting migrating baby salmon and lamprey. This is a great time of year to swing big leech and sculpin patterns, swing baitfish imitations, or drift flies that imitate old salmon flesh.

Sockeye Salmon fishing in June

In June, the Kenai River also receives a smaller push of sockeye, or “red,” salmon. This first run of Kenai sockeye head solely to the Russian River. Consequently, the majority of the fishing takes place in the refuge section of the upper Kenai near Cooper Landing. Anglers should expect to find heavier fishing pressure there, as it is the only push of harvestable salmon available this early to anglers. Patience is often rewarded, with limits of tasty, hard fighting Kenai River sockeye salmon.
