What species can I fish for during October on the Kenai River?

Rainbow Trout fishing on the Kenai River in October

As long as you can handle the cold, fishing for trout stays consistently good. As the water drops we utilize both single hand and two handed fly rods. There are still a lot of eggs and flesh in the water, so expect to push a few indicators and floats down the river. Many of the largest fish of the year are caught during these months. If you are looking to find your trophy, this is your time. Just make sure to bring warm clothes and a strong will.

Silver Salmon fishing in October

October is the last month that anglers can keep silver salmon. Fishing typically remains great through October. The water levels fall, concentrating the salmon into more easily targeted areas. Plan to be actively casting for these hard fighting fish.

Steelhead fishing in October

Steelhead fishing remains good all the way until the rivers ice over. Typically we will chase steelhead until the end of October, when the weather just becomes too unreliable. Keep in mind that the smaller rivers of the Kenai Peninsula are still at the whim of the weather. Storms and rain do push through, which can dirty up the river for a few days. Fortunately, there are multiple options on the Kenai Peninsula for an angler to fall back on in October.
