Considerations when planning your guided steelhead fly fishing trip in Alaska.
Steelhead typically begin to enter the Kenai Peninsula’s waters in the very beginning part of September. If we are lucky, sometimes they start as early as the last half of August. Successful steelhead fishing opportunities are available throughout September, October, into November. Eventually though, the cold weather wins out, and both anglers and fish become a bit lethargic.
To sum it up, as long as the river is not frozen, we can find steelhead somewhere on the Kenai Peninsula. We suggest that anglers bring layers, as temperatures can vary widely, and snow is never out of the question on a late season Kenai Peninsula steelhead fishing trip.

Steelhead Fly Fishing Techniques
Most of our fishing for steelhead on the Kenai Peninsula is done with the use of single hand and double hand fly rods. The shallow, rocky waters of the Kenai Peninsula easily snag up heavier conventional presentations. Typically anglers will be either drifting egg patterns are under an indicator, or swinging larger streamers through likely runs.
If you’re into two-handed fishing, The Kenai Peninsula presents great spey casting opportunities. Long casts are not as necessary here. Accuracy though, is a must. Good presentations produce good results on a regular basis.
